bobCast #14 The Podcast Project

This time we meet and interview some of the faculty that makeup the "Podcast Group" here at Broward Community College. These faculty members will come together to learn how to podcast and how to apply the technology to their classrooms. In this interview they will discuss their plans as to how they will use this technology in the classroom.

Our "Podcast Group" consists of the following South Campus faculty:

  • Dr. Patrick Ellingham - of the English Department
  • Prof. Francisco Grisales- Spanish (MFL)
  • Dr. Kate LeGrand - Office Systems Technology
  • Prof. Steven Godby - Soc./Bev. Sciences
  • Prof. Robert Buford (bob) - Speech and Communications

Once again we will feature the music of Ms. Adrina Thorpe. I know this is twice in a row but I like the way she sings. I hope you enjoy the podcast and each and everyone has a Happy Nwe Year and a great new semester!

bobCast-13-2005-11-27 What Do You Do When The bobCast Is Not Enough?

Welcome to bobCast 13 - The lucky edition.

Today we take a look at some storm technologies -
chainsaw 101 - How to purchase and sharpen your own chainsaw chain.

Wood stacking and hauling, and most important how to sweet talk city workers so that they will haul off all of the stuff in front of your house.

As soon as we can get a roofer to return our calls, we will cover the art of "The Roof". also known as how to get one on top of your house instead of in the backyard.

We wrap our ears around some "podsafe music" from the podsafe music network.
This podcast will feature a young lady with a beautiful voice, Adrina Thorpe.
The following is the discription from here podsafe music network page:

Bio:
On Adrina Thorpe's debut album, "elusive," delicate piano melodies and lush vocals weave in and out of each other, drifting amid the punchy bass and drum lines. Like paper-thin china or like sunrise on the gray ocean waves...Adrina's melodies captivate listeners with their distinct beauty.
Check out her website: http://www.adrinathorpe.com/

We will talk about some of the podcasting resources that Bob listens to in order to get his dose of teckno news.

And last but not least, we will talk briefly about the up comming "Podcast Project" where several Broward Community College professors try podcasting to develop both audio and video resources for their classrooms.

Next time we hope to interview several e-learning teachers who used their e-learning resources to weather the storm and keep their classes going durning the long "vacation" caused by Wilma.

This is the second of two workshops/demos that Mary Diaz, David Shulman and myself will do at the up coming League Of Innovation Conference in Dallas, TX. In addition to showing and demonstrating some of these devices, we discuss how they might be enployed in a classroom setting. Several people arounf the college were not able to attend this event and this podcast is intended to share with them some ofthe information that they might have missed.

bobCast #11 September 26th, 2005 Podcasting Meets WebCT Lite while using the Clickers

This week we meet with Professor Sharon Rifkin and speak with her about WebCT Lite and the workshops that the e-learning team is putting together to introduce this new effort to spread the use of technology in the classroom.

We, also, talk with Dr. Greg Reeder about his workshops on Computer Performance System (“clicker”) technology. This new technology helps the students provide feedback to the teacher in real time and provives the teacher with a better insight into how well the students understanfd the material covered in class.

David Shulman and Mary Diaz and I discuss the workshop "Is That a Class in Your iPod?". This workshop provides the attendee with an understanding of what procasting is, how it is created and how it can be enployed as a teaching tool by faculty.

A couple of strange characters (other than Bob) and some great "podsafe" music round out the lineup.

bobCast #7 Emerging Communication Technologies for Online Learning

On Thursday June 23 I attended the Emerging Technologies Conference held at The University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida. This conference was a part of the Partnership for the Advancement of Distributed Learning program at the University. This workshop covered several of the newer technologies that are being used by faculty in the classroom. These technologies include blogs, vlogs, podcasting, rss feeds, news aggregators and exposure to several different types of portable devices such as iPods, PDAs and Blackberry devices. This podcast discusses some of the information and ideas that were presented and how these technologies might be employed in the mobile classroom.

bobCast #6 June 6th, 2005 Using Podcasting as a Teaching Tool

How can podcasting be used as an educational tool? As discussed earlier, one of the biggest advantages of podcasting is the ability to download a podcast file and listen to it in a mobile fashion. This means that the student be use the file in any place they happen to be. This could work very well for the community college becasue the basic community college student is by nature very mobile. Many students have a long cummute just to get to the classroom. They then rush off to work, which means more time in the car or on the bus. The mobile MP3 player can go right along with them, and offer them entertainment or education. In the car, and FM modulator such as the Griffin iTrip for the iPod will allowthem the play their device through the car radio. They can listen to the class lecture that their professor has posted as a podcast on his or her website, or listen to a test review that might help them pass the test that they will take later in the day.
I teach a class entitled Introduction To Speech Communication in which the students are exposed to the various elements of speech communication including group discussion. We do an excersice called the Financial Aid Project. In this project, the class divides up into small groups of around five to seven students, and they must choose two people from a list to recieve scholarships that will allow them to complete four years of college that they might not otherwise be able to do on their own. Do they pick the person who has worked to achieve high scolastic standards, the football player or cheerleader or the person from a third world country who will go back to his country after school and help his people produce more much needed food?
In this bobCast, I recorded the presentation of each group and I have included the highlights from the presentations. When you listen to the reasons why they choose the people you start to get an insight into the thinking and feelings of the community college student.

bobCast #5 with Mary Diaz and David Shulman

In this week's bobCast, we meet with Professor Mary Diaz and with David Shulman thrown in for good measure. The "IT War Room" (a.k.a. The Roasted Bean) is the scene. We discuss the up coming League of Innoviation's CIT Conference to be held Oct. 2005 in Dallas, TX. Mary, David and I have been invited to present at the League on new upcomming technologies such as "podcasting", and explore some of the technologies making news, which may soon find their way into our classrooms as teaching tools. One of these technologies is the TabletPC which Mary uses in her WebCT e-learning classes to teach writing to her ESL students. Mary also trains faculty on the use of TabletPCs through her "Tablet Talk" sessions which she has held on each of the BCC campuses. As a sideline, Mary trains faculty in the use of WAM a software program used by the College to build websites for our College's Intranet. We hope you find this session of the bobCast interesting, and we hope you will keep coming back for more. And don't forget to tell "all" of your friends!

bobCast #4 with David Shulman

In this podcast I speak with David Shulman who is the Director of Instructional Technology at the college. David oversees many of the projects that one sees when they visit the Instructional Technology website and designs and builds many of the webpages found there. We met in the secret headquaters of the Instructional Technology Department in downtown Davie, FL.

Today we discuss:

The difference between IT1 and IT2.
The plans for the summer IT workshops.
The role of mobile technology at the college.
The up coming League Of Innovation CIT in the fall.
And most important of all- Why David talks the way he does.

Special Note: Several people have told me that they have not listened to the bobCast because they do not have an iPod. While the "pod" part of the word "podcast comes from the word "iPod", you do not have to use an iPod to listen to a podcast. The podcast file is just a simple mp3 file just like the music files that one can download from the internet. You can play the file in Windows Media player, itunes, Music Match or any program that allows for the playing of an mp3 file.

To save the file to your computer just right click the file name, if you are using a Windows computer, and choose "save target as" from the menu. You can then choose where you want to save to file and play the file by just clicking on the file name. It will open in you default music player, or you can "right click" and choose to play it in another player from the list provided on the screen.

Happy listening!
