bobCast 32 The What's Happening Podcast

To listen to bobCast # 32 click here.

It has been a while since the last bobCast, and I wanted to bring folks up-to-date on the podcast scene here at Broward Community College.

Since the last bobCast on August 16th the Department of Instructional Technology here at Broward Community College has held two podcast workshops. One for Beginning podcasters and one for the Intermediate. Our last workshop had a full house and several people had to be asked to wait until next semester. If you missed the workshop or were not able to sign up, we are planning to offer all four of the workshops again next semester.

In September, I was able to attend the Podcast and New Media Expo held this year in Ontarino, California. Several people who have been successful in the New Media business (as podcasting is known in professional circles)were on hand and one of these was a young man was Hayden Black. What makes Hayden Back stand out is he is very good at what he does and he is a Broward Community College graduate who attended Central Campus in the late 1980's.
If you would like to check out Hayden's latest production you can do so at http://www.goodnightburbank.com .

One other high point of the conference was a young couple (Eric and Cat Susch ) who produce a kitting podcast called "Lets Knit 2 gather". While there are many podcasts about knitting, I was impressed with the professional level of their show. They even gave a workshop on producing a quality video podcast, and they were right on target. Not only do they shoot their own video but they write the script, rehearse and do their own scenery and lighting and Cat knits her own costumes. You don't have to take my word for it just check out the podcast at http://www.letsknit2gether.com .
The bobCast has also started a video section for all those videos that get made and need a place to be shown. The videos can be found in two places. The first of these is http://bccmovies.blogspot.com and by going to the second at http://www.thebobcast.com and click on the videos tab.

The bobCast has a new home on South Campus. It is a part of the South Campus Student Broadcast project funded last year by SPD. We are trying to introduce students to podcasting by training them to "broadcast their ideas to the world using podcast technology. So far we have produced several videos and a bi-weekly production of the college newspaper, The Observer called the "Ob-cast". Members of The Observer staff read and discusses the top stories and the feature editorials. The Obcast is produced about a week after the paper comes out every other Friday.

Itunes University known as itunesU will soon come on line here at BCC and as we stated in an eariler podcast this will give us an additional 500 giga-bytes of storage and a new platform from which to reach the world through podcasting.

Music for this podcast was furnished by blues artist Cheryl Arena. You can check her out and purchase her music from her website at http://www.cherylarena.com .

bobCast 31 the Opening Day Podcast

Every year Broward Community College in Ft. Lauderdale conducts a Opening Day event called "The Marketplace". This year's event took place on the North Campus of Broward Community College on August 16, 2007, and provided those in attendance information about some of the projects that people at the college have developed to aid their colleagues in improving their experience whether in the classroom or the office setting. This year several of these people shared their information with me and I video taped them for the bobCast. I hope you enjoy this video bobCast #31.

bobCast #29 The iTunes U Podcast

Click HERE to listen to The bobCast #29

In this bobCast we cover the news and events on the latest in the podcasting efforts at BCC.

1. On March 17th we held our first training session for our new iLeaders. The iLeaders program provides the money and equipment for specific faculty members on each campus to act as podcasting gurus and work with faculty on that campus who might want to get started with podcasting or who might need help along the way.

North Campus– Marci Carabelli and Bobette Woselensky

Central Campus– Susan Finazzo, Steve Obenauf and Mary Diaz

South Campus– Dominique Charlotteaux and Abe Biggs

College-wide – Robert Buford you can reach me on South Campus at 8925 or by email at rbuford@broward.edu.

We plan on doing additional training this semester and by the end of the summer and the start of the new academic year in August these folks should be up and running and we will be shifting podcasting here at the college into high gear.

2. In April, I attended the A.D.C.L.I. which stands for Apple Digital Campus Leadership Institute. This was held at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, GA. This Institute centered on preparing ourselves as Faculty and educators to deal with the Digital Native student.

A. Students for whom cell phones are their chief form of communication or at least it seems that way. I was born into a world where only a few people had telephones. The world of “party lines” and operators who were real people and sometimes you knew their names.

B. Students who write few letters but hundreds of emails, and take their classes on line.

C. Students who many times prefer to “text message” someone as opposed to speaking with them personally.

D. Students who do not remember what the world was like before the personal computer.

E. Students who are the “Youtube”, “Facebook” and the “My Space” generation.

The members of the Institute talked about how they used Macintosh based technology and podcasting to provide instruction to their students and many of the faculty brought their students to the sessions and demonstrated the projects that they had completed. I saw a young female student who had done a video project that I was sure was a graduate project, and when I commented on what a good project this was for a graduate student, she informed me that she was only in her second year.

It is a different world and we must be ready or like Douglas Mc Arthur said about old soldiers, we might just “Fade Away”.

3. Dr. Patrick Ellingham and I wrote an SPD grant, which has been funded, to establish an experimental student radio station on South Campus using podcast technology to “broadcast” our students programs to the world. With older student radio stations the radio signal could only extend out about 10 miles or less. With podcast technology the podcast can be made available to the World. Anyone with a computer and an Internet connection can “receive” our radio shows. We hope to set that facility up over the summer and have it in operation in the Fall of 2007.

I would like to thank Dr. Ellingham for all the support and encouragement that he has given to the “Podcasting” efforts here at BCC. Thanks to Pat and the SPD committee we have a better podcasting program than many of the larger Universities not only in Florida but around the country. I also owe a big thank you Russ Adkins and the Instructional Technology Department who had the vision to make podcasting a part of the distance learning efforts of the College.

4. If things go as planned, BCC will become a part of iTunes-U in the near future. On May 23 Dr. David Armstrong the Chancellor of the Community College System for Florida will sign an agreement that will allow all of the Community Colleges to become part of Apple’s iTunes-U.

What is iTunes-U? It is apart of the Apple iTunes system that allows schools to have their own iTunes page on the iTunes system that Apple uses to market it’s audio and vedio products. This has several things going for it:

A. Our students already know know how to use the system. It is the same one that they use to download music and videos for their personal use.

B. It gives the College and Faculty their own iTunes page where their can post their podcasts either on a public or private basis. This would allow students easy access to their assignments and review materials.

B. And it gives the college an additional 500 gigabytes of storage in addition to our present terabyte of server space.

We will join the ranks of the big schools such as Stanford, UC Berkeley and many other schools across the nation.

As soon as the iTunes-U becomes a reality at the college I plan on making it the main topic for a podcast focusing just on iTunes-U and how to take advantage of oll the things it has to offer.

5. The bobCast has made it to the “Funny Papers” ! On April 30 “NON SEQUITUR” featured a cartoon of The bobCast. It showed a old guy named Bob sitting on his porch with a telescope and a sign that read “Ask me about the neighbors”. The caption read “Before there was podcasting there was bobCasting” and I though Adam Curry was the first podcastor.

A special thanks to Holly Gilly, Fred Searcy and Jerry Enloe for thinking enough of the bobCast to send the clipping to me in the mail.

THE FUTURE

We hope to start doing more video podcasting in the near future. We have some new equipment coming on board and hope to start working with people to produce podcasts that can not only be heard but seen as well. Video is such a powerful medium that we need to start producing as much of this as we can.

The Sciences and Nursing are two areas that jump right out but there are others as well.

I hope you enjoyed this podcast and hope to be back real soon.

Podcast #28 PDD at BCC

Click Here to Listen to the bobCast

Podcasting has become a part of the distance learning program at Broward Community College in FT. Lauderdale, Florida. On Friday the second of February David Shulman and I presented a workshop presentation at the College's Professional Development Day entitled "Becoming a Podcast Professional at BCC". Professional Development Day is a day of workshops and activities designed to help the staff and faculty of the college sharpen their skills and knowledge in many different areas. We were honored to be included in the line up. As a service to those who missed the presention by attending other activities or for those who just could not get enough of podcasting the first time around we have included the entire workshop as a bobCast podcast. This podcast runs almost an hour in length but it includes all of the workshop from beginning to end.
In the workshop we show you what a podcast is, and discuss how podcasting fits into the world of education and even take a quick look at commerical podcasting. We cover podcatching software programs such as Apple's iTunes and explain RSS technology and show how this technology can be used to deliver information by "pushing" the data to the student. And a bonus, we show several examples of how other faculty at the college are using the technology and creating their own podcasts for use in their classes.

Showcased are:

Michael Minassian Eye on literature Podcast which can be located at:
http://eyeonliterature.blogspot.com

Sharon Rifkin who's wellness podcast is located at:
http://rifkinsblog.blogspot.com

Fred Searcy who is using podcasting to teach his students lab safety for his biology classes at:
http://www.broward.edu/~fsearcy

bobCast 27 M&M meets PDD

Click Here to access the bobCast 27

In this bobCast we speak with Professor Mary Diaz of the Mentor/Mentee Project and Professor Michael Minassian of the English Department on Central Campus. Michael has started a new podcast at the College entitled "Eye On Literature". He uses the podcast to highlight writers that he is covering in his online literature classes at the college. He shares one of my passions which is visiting the homes of famous (dead) writers. In my case, they can come from other walks of life. Mary explains the Mentor/Mentee project, and expands on the importance of the project to the Instructional Technology Department and the College as a whole.
I talk about the up coming podcast workshop and the day of workshops at the College which we cakll Professional Development Day.

bobCast #26 The Steve Eliot Cast

The world famous Steve Eliot joins us today to bring us up to date on all the things he has been doing since his retirement 5 years ago. Steve is a special person in my life. He introduced me to the computer and the wonders of technology way back in 1983 right after I came to BCC as the technical director of the Theatre Department on Central Campus. Two of my sons took Steve for Art, while they were students here at the college, and he had them running all over South Florida looking for art. His classes were always the most creative and interesting my sons ever had, and they still talk about them today. Steve is a real teacher's teacher. When you were in Steve's class and the classtime was over, you hated to leave the room. Steve always marched to the sound of a different drum and sometimes the drum didn't even look like a drum at all. The slogan "Why be normal?" fits Steve's approach to life. He has traveled and created video with his trusted Macintosh computer which he was using long before most of the rest of us.
Anyway, click on this link to hear my interview with Steve. I hope you enjoy hearing it half as much as I did in recording it.
