This is the Christmas Cast for December 19^th 2006

In this bobCast we will be talking about some of the new MP3 players on the market and talking about the the different Apple iPods and the Archos 504 and 604 models.

And we take a look forward to the new semester where we will be launching our new podcast training for the new iteam associates for podcasting here at BCC.

And we give you the new schedule for professional development training for the spring semester.

There will be two Professioanl Development Workshops for the Spring Semester. They are Feb. 01,2005 and Feb. 20, 2006. Each of these workshops will last from 1:30pm to 3:30pm and the room(s) and building information will be posted as soon as I know.

A. Techniques for making not only my podcasts better but things I can pass on to my students in my classes and my fellow faculty in the workshops that I do through the Department of Instructional Technology.
B. New audio and video equipment that can be used to improve the quality of my podcasts and help me in recommending equipment to others at the college.
C. And lastly the sheer excitement of the new podcast industry and the impact that it is making on the world of mass communications, and how it offers freedom to people to express themselves in business and in the classroom. This is a great mobile technology both from the listener and the producer as well.
VI. Idol Worship of Younger People.
People in the podcast business are much younger than myself.

Workshop Podcast
On Friday September 8th the Instructional Technology Department presented the first workshop in the Podcasting series that will be offered this semester. The workshop was held on Central Campus in Building 9 room 102. The workshop covered �Podcatching� or how to go about finding and subscribing to Podcasts. We talked about and showed how to use podcatching software � iTunes being the most outstanding of the applications.

Apple in the Technology News:

Over view of the changes in the iPod and iTunes

BCC uses mostly Windows based machines. Windows is the main computer supported by the college as it is in most of Corporate America. The network used by the college supports the Windows platform even though the email software that we run on these windows machines is not the Microsoft Product which is Outlook but is GroupWise. GroupWise is a Novell Product. A lot of people think that the PC, which stands for �Personal Computer� (a term in the early days (less than 30 years ago) that allow one to separate it from real computers which at the time was mainframes and minicomputers) is the only real computer. The Apple computer falls into the �other� category. This is ironic since the Apple personal computer predated the IBM PC by several years. And of course it was not the �first� personal computer, but it was the first to give the Personal Computer a real role in the computer business.

This passed Tuesday September 12th Apple introduced several new additions to the world of Media. The world of media is a world in which Apple is a major player if not the industry leader.

Will allow the wireless interface for video on your computer to be viewed on the �big Screen TV �in the den. This could be good news for the video podcast effort since you can watch Professor Searcy�s �biology� videos on the BIG Screen. It will be more comfortable than watching on your computer at a desk.

Pat Ellingham who is at professor of English on BCC South Campus and the Faculty Advisor for the college's magazine publication talks to us about the use of Apple Macintosh computers in the publication of the School�s Magazine P�an Ku and his thoughts about using technology to teach.

The Welcome Back Podcast

Welcome to bobCast #20 This is the Welcome back podcast for Friday August 25, 2006.

The first Duty Day for Fall semester 2006 was at the Omni Auditorium on North Campus. There were a lot of tables setup and people were presenting the things they were doing at the college. This was done last year and it seems that it was an even bigger success this year.

Of course, Instructional technology was there and we had several tables set up showing the things we are doing to incorporate technology into the classrooms of Broward Community College.

Sharon Rifkin and company had a table showing off their E- Learning Group program.
Included in their demo was WebCt lite and the new WebCt version 6.

Mary Diaz was promoting The Mentor&Mentee Project. This is a project where faculty work with faculty to complete a project allowing them to bring one of the technologies into their classroom.

We had the bobCast booth setup and we had several people stop by to say hello. I attempted to record all these folks but I was unable to get my equipment to work so I am going to do the best I can to remember what they had to say.

Todd covers events that come under area of Students Affairs which includes some of the workshops to help improve student performance. Roundtable Discussions
The Broward County Library approached me a few weeks back about creating a podcast on a couple of events they were having at the South Campus. The first of these was Roundtable discussion on Terrorism and the second was Roundtable on Fatherhood in different cultures. The first event was to be held in the "Mass-media Room" of the Library and the second was to be held in what we refer to as the "South Campus Theater" also known as the Teaching Auditorium by some of the old timers at the campus.
I learned several things about location recording from working on these programs. One was do not assume that your recording equipment will interface with the house systems without a good deal of trial and error, and one has to check out the scene and the equipment in person to make sure that things will go as planned. You might think that any old idiot would know such things, but I soon discovered that I was somehow a special type of idiot when I found myself running around trying to get things to work at the last minute.
At any rate, things did work out and the events were posted to the web at there own website. You can link to the podcasts at http:www.broward.edu/~rbuford/podcasts/roundtables . This was the first podcast to be posted to our new podcast webserver which was funded by a grant from SPD this past year. I would like to thank the folks in the Information Technology Department for their help and support in getting us up and running. We will be gearing up for several workshops this next year on how to create your own audio podcast and/or video podcast and upload it to the new server.

Finding Good examples of Podcasts

Remember the teacher in school who made you want to attend class so that you wouldn�t miss anything? Not because you might not do well on the final exam, but because you enjoyed the class and you did not want to miss what the teacher had to say. Well podcasting let�s this type of teacher shine.

Looking for examples of podcasts I ran across a teacher named Bob Packett who has an easy going style of presentation that makes you want to come back for more. As some of you may know, I enjoy history, and the part of history I like the most is the "people part". Stories of the people from history who shaped the world we live in today. Too many times people get the idea that these people are just characters in a book, but tese were real people who lived and breathed. This prospective makes history come to life for me. Professor Packett does many of the things that makes history interesting while allowing me to learn the important points that make the events important.

This is a daily podcast that is produced by a man and wife team. Professor Bob does the recordings and his wife acts as his technical support. She posts the files to his website and creates his RSS feed, and might even post the changes to his website. This is part of a recording made on Professional Day Feb. 24, 2006. This is an over view of podcasting and using podcast audio in an educational setting.

Podcasting can be used to help students cover or review material that they may have missed in regular class meetings. In this podcast we look at some of the software and hardware that makes this possible. While the whole workshop lasted almost one and one half hours this is only a segument of the total workshop.

TECHNOLOGY NEWS

Today we will be looking at the technology news at BCC and the big news item is the the approval of the Podcast Project grant.

This grant allows us to have a server for podcasting.

Software and hardware that will allow several faculty to produce a podcast or two as a pilot project and podcasting can now become a player in the College's e-learning system.

Podcasting has been called the TiVo of the classroom.
in many ways it brings the classroom to the student anytime and any where.

I attended a workshop by apple computer the other day where they presented information about their new software that allows for the creation of podcasts.

The good news is that it looks very good and is somewhat easy to use.
The bad news is that it will only run on a Mac.
